1. How to transport firearms and ammunition?

Transport is only allowed on the direct way from one location to another (i.e. Hotel to shooting range).
Firearms must be transported unloaded, with no ammunition present in either the chamber or an inserted magazine. Loaded Magazines are NOT allowed.
Firearms must be transported in a closed container (one must not be able to draw it at any time).
Ammunition may be transported in the same container.

2. How to store firearms and ammunition in a hotel/appartment/camper?

Firearms must NOT be kept in cars. Exempt are non-semi-automatic rifles with a length of over 60 cm that are unusable (e.g. trigger lock, removed bolt) at daytime for under 6 hours, in the nighttime for under 3 hours and the firearm must not be recognizeablefrom the outside. -> having an AR-15 or Glock in a Camper is not allowed.
Storing is considered safe, if another person is unable to obtain the firearm and/or ammunition.
The Firearms must be kept in a container that unable to be opened without special tools. The container must not be free to move (e.g. a safe must be screwed to the wall or a container is too heavy to move without special tools).
The Firearms can be stored loaded.

3. What kind of Firearms and ammunition are considered prohibited and should not be brought into the country? Do foreign exemption apply?

-Fully Automatic firearms of any kind

-Concealed firearms (disguised as an object of daily use, i.e. pen gun)

-Guns that can be taken down, folded up, pushed together, shortened in an “unusual” way (e.g. surivalguns, quickremoveable barrels)

-Shotguns shorter than 90 cm or with a barrel shorter than 45 cm

-Pump action shotguns of any kind

-Rifles (everything longer than 60 cm) that can be shortened to under 60 cm (i.e. folding shaft)

-Military ammo like tracer, smoke, marking, armorpiercing, Incendiary or sabot projectiles

4. What kind of accessories for Firearms is prohibited and should not be brought into the country? Do foreign exemption apply?

-suppressors; unless you have a valid Austrian hunting permit; foreign exemptions are not recognized.

-Lasers ≥ 1mW must not be sold to consumers. It is unclear wether one can bring such lasers with them.

-Magazines: Sport shooters are allowed to bring their magazines for semi-automatic rifles that can hold over 10 rounds

-Maching Magazines that fit in both rifle (everything > 60 cm) and pistol (≤ 60 cm) must not be inserted in a pistol when they hold more than 20 rounds. (e.g. 33rd Glock Mags that fit in a 9mm PDW must not be inserted in a Glock Pistol)

5. Does Austria require additional Documents for traveling with the EFP, Passport and Invitation?

No additional documents are required beyond the ones mentioned above. It is critical to have them on you, otherwise your firearms, magazines and ammunition will be confiscated!

6. How long can one stay with the firearms in the country while traveling

There is no fixed limit, the reason for your journey must be hunting or a sport shooting event.

7. Are there any other restrictions that apply?

You must not bring more than 5 firearms!
